Trying to Keep Open — A Stroke Survivor’s Story

By: Steve Boatwright, business owner, stroke survivor

For years, my wife Pam and I dreamed about opening an upscale resale shop. When we moved to Bend, OR and an opportunity came up to do it; we didn’t hesitate. We opened Elite Repeat, an Upscale Resale store carrying name brand clothing and accessories at a third of retail prices.

If you own or have ever owned a small business you know the challenges, the ups and downs and the unpredictable things that can happen. Six years after opening Elite Repeat the unpredictable happened; I had a stroke and was hospitalized for a month. I was told later that they almost lost me a couple times.

As stroke survivors know it was a shock to my wife, my family, and me. We wondered about our future, what we are going to do now that I have had a stroke and am paralyzed on my right side. We had faith that we would get through this and with a lot of help from friends who graciously came to our aid by helping at the store and bringing in customers to shop, we started to see some hope and success. We still were not out of the woods and knew it was going to be a rough ride for a long time, but we were optimistic.

Then COVID-19 hit and shut us down for 2 months. I thought, OUCH! that’s going to leave a mark! We are now back open and hoping we can make it through this uncertain time and continue to offer the Bend community great items at reasonable prices. But as of now, like many small businesses, it’s week to week and we’ll know more by the end of July. Through it all, we are keeping the faith and grateful for all we have and look forward to the years ahead of us.

Always remember: “Life is short, even in its longest days”
