“Who, then, can so softly bind up the wound of another as he who has felt the same wound himself?” – Thomas Jefferson
The Peer Support Program is designed to offer people who have suffered a stroke the opportunity to talk with a specially selected and trained person with the same or similar injury who has returned to a full and meaningful life. The program promotes:
- A support system
- A resource network
- Setting and reaching attainable goals
- Restoring hope + purpose
A Peer Supporter experiences the satisfaction of sharing one-on-one with their Peer and given the opportunity to “tell it like it is.” Peer Supporting can be a rewarding experience for all involved.
Research shows peer support improves wellbeing and the ability to cope with life challenges by:
- Discussing feelings and experiences
- Introducing ideas and approaches others have found helpful
- Reassuring you’re not alone in how you are feeling
- Connecting with others
- Sense of belonging
- Encouraging you to value your strengths
- Building self-esteem and confidence
- Create optimism about the future
- Finding purpose
